Assist A University Student
Published at: March 28, 2026
Is it possible for a student in University to support him or her self while studying?
Sadly, the answer to this question may have more to do with geography than with work ethic or determination.
In Kenya, many of our young people are ready and willing to work but with a very tight job market, work, even very menial work, often goes to those who have papers and college students are left with few options. Our students try to support themselves with small business and can get a few shillings doing this but often not enough to pay their rent and other expenses while they are in school.
Because most of the young people in Children of the Light sponsorship program already come from vulnerable situations and broken homes, they do not have anyone to look to to meet their needs other than the staff of ROMI. While we are grateful for any opportunity we have to support them, by the end of 2026, there will be more than 100 in University and it is no longer possible for us or the children's program to take care of all those who are desperate.
We would therefore welcome you to be a blessing to one student and make their journey through University just a bit lighter and ensure them that they will be able to make it to the point where they are able to support themselves and give hope to others around them.
$50 per month is a typical amount to help a student with rent, food, phone costs and transportation to and from school. You would receive an email indicating the young person who received your support and have a chance to interact with them should you so desire.
