*The Vicious Cycle of Poverty in Malawi: A Struggle for Survival*

Malawi, a small landlocked country in southeastern Africa, is one of the poorest countries in the world. With a population of around 19 million people, over 50% live below the poverty line, struggling to access basic necessities like food, education, and healthcare.

*The Education Crisis*

In Malawi, education is a luxury many can't afford. The lack of access to quality education perpetuates the cycle of poverty, with many children dropping out of school to support their families or give an opportunity to their younger siblings to learn to read and write. The student-to-teacher ratio is staggering, with some classes having over 100 students per teacher. This results in poor academic performance, limited opportunities, and a workforce with limited skills. So few students attend University that anyone with a degree in any field is considered qualified to teach high school.

*The Brick Making Industry: A Double-Edged Sword*

When many of these young people leave school, the boys turn to brick making. Brick making is one of the few reliable sources of income for many Malawians, but it's a tough and labor-intensive job. Workers toil for long hours, often in hazardous conditions, with minimal pay. And sadly, this industry majorly contributes to deforestation, as wood is used as fuel for firing bricks, further exacerbating environmental degradation.

*Deforestation and Environmental Damage*

Malawi's forests are being depleted at an alarming rate (4th fastest in the world), with over 90% of the population relying on wood for energy. This has severe environmental consequences, including soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, and increased greenhouse gas emissions. The impact on agriculture is devastating, with changing weather patterns and reduced soil fertility severely reducing crop yields.

*Challenges in Growing Crops*

Malawi's agricultural sector is the backbone of the economy, but it's plagued by challenges. Poor soil quality, inadequate irrigation systems, and limited access to fertilizers and seeds make it difficult for farmers to grow crops. Climate change has led to frequent droughts and floods, further threatening food security and plunging each succeeding generation into even deeper poverty.

*Breaking the Cycle*

While we at ROMI cannot claim to have all the answers to the challenges Malawi faces, we desire to do all we can by the grace of God. Following is our planned approach:

1. We plan to enroll around 50-100 children with academic potential in the sponsorship program. This will enable us to cover the expenses of going to visit them in Malawi each term.

2. When we go to follow up with the children in the sponsorship program, we are then also able to reach out to many others. Schools in Malawi are open for us to come and share with students their God given mandate to take care of their environment as well as churches and other community gatherings.

*Your Support*

If you would like to make a difference in Malawi, you can do so several ways including sponsoring a child (Location: Blantyre). You can also make a one time donation on our current projects page which will allow us to do more events and programs in the community when we are in Malawi to visit the children. We will be grateful to hear from you!
