From Hardship to Triumph

Meet Phyllis, the first graduate of Children of the Light sponsorship program. Her story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the power of friendship.
Phyllis' early life was marked by hardship. Her mom passed away when she was young, and her dad's health struggles began when she was in high school, leaving her school fees unpaid. Determined to do well, Phyllis cried out to God for His help and when we visited her school for a mentorship program, she pleaded for support. By God's grace, a sponsor from Ohio took Phyllis' burden as his own and began walking with her. Phyllis persevered, fueled by a desire to create a better life for herself and her family.
Phyllis pursued her passion for computer science. She worked tirelessly while studying, balancing academics with part-time jobs and small business to pay her own rent, food, transportation and phone costs. Her dedication paid off – she not only excelled in her studies but also became a pillar of support for her family, educating her brother and helping her sister through a crisis with her children.
When her beloved dad passed away while she was in her second year of college, Phyllis felt as though her world would crumble. At times the burden was so heavy and the pain too real but she would remind herself of the way God had stood with her thus far and she knew He would continue helping her.
Today, Phyllis is thriving. She has a fulfilling career and is also building her own business. She is engaged to be married next year and has brought together a group of young people who go to different children's homes and organizations to give back what the Lord has given them. She is also a part of the greater ROMI by joining our 3:00 - 5:00 am prayer meeting each week. Her journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support, individuals can overcome incredible obstacles and achieve their dreams.
Phyllis' story inspires us all. Her determination and compassion are a shining example of what can be achieved with a little help and a lot of heart. Would you continue praying for her and many others who are in the same position she once was?
